Long ago, I got started with Arduino by building this Nerf gun shooter with my dad.  It uses a PIR sensor to detect someone's presence, and then warns them to stop using a text-to-speech module.  If they don't go away, it activates a Nerf gun.  I hacked into the Nerf gun by attaching a servo to engage the trigger, and a circuit driven by Arduino to switch on the motor.
