Backyard Impossible Fountain
For our backyard remodel, I built an "impossible fountain" as a showpiece. It's basically an acrylic tube of a carefully chosen diameter that goes into a garden faucet at one end. The faucet is set in the closed position. I glued the end into the faucet after carefully drilling small holes near the edge of the tube from which water can spill out. The other end of the tube is attached to a pond pump, and set inside a bowl with a wire mesh to support the tube laterally an inch or two above the pump. The mesh is weighed down by stones to keep the tube somewhat anchored, and hide the pump. The bowl is filled with water, and when the pump is turned on, it will appear as if the faucet is pouring water into the bowl despire no water connection to the faucet.
It's proved to be a great conversation piece when we have people over. Small kids are particularly amazed by it, as are the adults.
